Could anyone help me make a single-sided PCB? I've laid out a single-sided version of the magnetic rotary encoder board, with the encoder chip on the copper side, and everything else changed to through hole instead of surface mount, but I don't have access to a UV box, or even a laser printer! All offers of help or advice gratefully received.

Why didn't I think of this when I ordered all the electronics from Makerbot? Why?

Is anyone planning to order their electronics (or whatever) from MakerBot in the US? I need a magnetic rotary encoder PCB, which I can't find anywhere in Europe, but from MakerBot I'd pay £1.22 for the PCB + £17.42 postage + £2.80 VAT + £8 handling charge = £29.43 which is ridiculous for a $2 pcb. I HATE paying more in p+p than the cost of the goods!

So does anyone want to do a combined order & share postage costs? If you're ordering one of the electronics kits, the postage charges don't seem so steep (since they're constant, except the VAT).

Thanks!
I can't find ABS for less than £40/Kg once you've paid vat & p&p, which seems pretty steep, and I can't find PLA at all. Is it worth importing from the US, or do I need to search harder? Please list good deals for all to share!

Hi all,

I'm new to the RepRap thing, but am looking forward to getting properly involved.

I'm a Medical Engineering student from the University of Surrey, currently coming to the end of a placement year in Crawley.

I have had the go-ahead to use the industrial RP facilities here at my placement company to manufacture the parts for a RepRap machine, but am a little lost as to where to start, so there are a few questions that someone could help with.

1) Would you recommend going for the standard Cartesian Bot from Source Forge?

2) What is deal with extruder heads? Does RepRap have the functionality to use support material when manufacturing products, and if so which version of the extruder head should I go for? (Having looked around the blogs a bit, I think I'm going to go for ABS)

3) What would you recommend is the best way to sort the electronics? I notice that RRRF have released a motherboard within the last few weeks. Is this the sensible option?

I realise I'm going to be doing things 'backwards' as I need to do the mechanical stuff now as I won't be working much longer and need to get the RP'd bits made, and then I'll be doing the electronics when I get some time over the summer.

Any info greatly appreciated.

Cheers

I want to build a RepRap, and am looking for advice on which model(s) are easiest, cheapest, nicest, etc. The information on the main site seems rather confusing - there are a lot of different options to choose from! Ideally, I'd like to spend under £150 on materials, since I'm but a poor student.

I have some advantages that others may not have, materials-wise - I have free access to a laser-cutter at my school, so could cut acrylic, plywood etc easily. Also, my dad teaches an electrical engineering course, so I could borrow some components from his workplace, such as a microcontroller board that could work as equivalent to an Arduino/Sanguino.

I'm just leaving school and have good maths and physics skills, but have never undertaken a practical project like this before.

I'd like to know where to start, what model would be best to build, and any other useful advice you can think of. Thanks!

hey all,

i am a final year technology and education student at glasgow university, part of my final year project was based around creating a RepRap. The device is nearing completion after 7 months with a number of breaks due to other commitments.

The Robert Clark Centre at Glasgow University also has a project with a secondary school in the area, Braes high school. The are building a BitsfromBytes laser cut kit.

There has been a blog created to give greater access to the schools project and I have contributed some of my photo journal to it. It is still pretty basic but may be of interest.

The address is-

[braesreprapblog.blogspot.com]

I think I may have more to contribute to RepRap forums in future but at present don't have any free time.

I have honestly loved the build process and the forums and website have been a huge source of help. I have spoken to lots of my peers at uni and friends at other universities and there has been a lot of interest in the project.
I have also been in contact and been contacted by a few other secondary schools who are interested in using RepRap in their curriculum. Which is encouraging for me and may be of interest to you???

more soonish...

Hi,

Long time lurker, first time poster here. I am based in Oxford and would like to arrange a monthly meeting in central Oxford for anyone else who is interested in RepRaps. I can provide a venue in central Oxford a short walk from the train and bus stations and parking.

I was thinking of either the second Thursday of every month from 1830-2030 or the second Sunday of every month from 1500-1700 in a room where we can set up machines, help each other, swap tips, debug machines, etc. and then ajourn to a pub/restuarant afterwards.

Anyone else up for this?

If so, Thursdays or Sundays or another day/time?

I would like to do the first meet on either Thursday 8th January 2009 or Sunday 11th January 2009 and will offer a bribe of free beer and soft drinks for the first meeting!

In order to book the room, I would like to have firm expressions of interest by Sunday this week if possible (4th January 2009) - thanks!

Hi guys,

I've decided to take the plunge. I'm ordering a full electronics kit from the RRRF and when I've fixed that together, I'm planning to get the BitsFromBytes full mechanical kit. I've got a lot of PC bits and spares (including a PC 750W PSU) which I think will supply the power OK :-).

Has anyone got good UK supplies for the 3mm feedstock? Or suggestions for the prefered material? I was wondering whether to grab one of the ABS coils from the RRRF - but there must be uk suppliers? Or do you guys get plasic from the states?
I have read through all you posts, I see most of them are about the difficulties of ordering components in the UK.

Hi,

I received my boards from the reprap store a few weeks back. I have been trying to order the electrical parts so I can start soldering up my boards, however I am no expert on the electrical side of things so I am finding ordering these parts quite hard. I want to source the parts in the UK so they dont have to be flown half way across the world.

I have started to put together a order at RS components but I have found that a lot of the exact parts are not avaliable through RS. I have tried to work out suitable alternatives, but by the time I has got through half the parts I started to doubt what I had chosen to order was correct.

I then attempted to put together an order at uk Farnell. It has most of the components available but they have to be sent over from America at an extra cost.

How did you guys get the components? Should I just order through mouser in the US to make sure I get the parts that will do the job?

I'm from Bristol and been following RepRap for a while. However I'm holding of a build, until I can get my hands on the RP parts. As I don't have the space or tools needed to make them. I now Ian Adkins is hoping to have a fully assembled and working machine soon.

Eventually I want to build RC boat hulls with it and carbonfiber moulds. Although I would need a larger printing area which looks like it would be simple enough to achieve, also a two head machine would be grate. If I could get some sort of conductive plastic then you could integrate circuits within a print.

Hello.

We have reprap as my final tear group project. We are looking forward to order parts within a week. We have had a look at the parts list online and feel that there are many parts that can be found in the UK itself. That got us thinking and we were able to source many parts from within the UK.

But a majority of them are still on their way from the USA. I was thinking whether anyone knew how many parts we can get locally or nationally. All the tools needed and all the fasteners, screws etc. were never of any concern, its just the other major parts like the motors, the PCBs etc. that are on their way from America. That eats up a lot of our time which we can possibly save, if someone can share this little piece of information.

Warm regards,
