Brian,

I wanted to invite you and the RepRap group to my house in Belcamp, MD
for
the second ever Harford Hackerspace meeting. This is a meeting for
anyone who may potentially be interested in becoming one of the
founding members of the Hackerspace.

The ideal member is someone who can attend the hackerspace at least
once a week. The physical location of our hackerspace will likely be
somewhere between Joppa (Harford) and White Marsh (Baltimore Co.).

We currently have 5 serious members who are very excited about
building a hackerspace. We are looking for several more to be able to
really get this off the ground and hopefully keep membership dues
under $50.

Please spread the word and e-mail info@harfordhackerspace.org for more
information on this Sundays meeting.

The HacDC sponsored RepRap build was a huge success with lots of positive feedback and lots accomplished. The actual Darwin machine purchased by HacDC was about 1/3 - 1/2 assembled when last I saw it Sunday.

After long and in depth negotiations with the Dark Overlords of HacDC I have gotten permission for our group to venture into the secret lair and work on the Darwin on the 21st of March on our usual Saturday afternoon 12-4. At this point I don't know what we will be doing with the machine, maybe finishing assembly, maybe tuning the software to get it printing, maybe just printing stuff. I will be getting that kind of info closer to the date, but whatever it is it will be new stuff to most of us. This is a BfB acrylic Darwin with the newest electronics and a new pinch wheel extruder so there's definitely something for everybody to learn from. The meeting place will be the HacDC lab space, directions are here: [hacdc.org] (down and to the left) or I will be mailing out details later along with details of what to expect in the way of activities. See you there!

I'm fairly new to the RepRap project, and I'm attempting to build what amounts to a darwin style RepStrap, and I've managed to confused myself considerably in regards to the electronics used to control the device. As best I can decypher the project is in the middle of transitioning from V2 to V3 of the electronics and as such the RRRF has switched to stocking mostly the new boards and I can't seem to piece together the information I need from the wiki. I'm wondering if anyone would mind exchanging a little information with me to help me complete the construction of my RepStrap.

As a bit about my modifications to the project, mostly I'm building the Catesian Robot in a considerably beefed up way to enable higher-torque tool heads (A milling head is of equal concern to me as the Thermoplastic head.). The bot is being constructed from a combination of tubular and 90 deg angle steel, with the primary structure welded together. This moves toward a construction that requires additional skills, but offers the bonus of substantially increased strength while allowing an overall larger work space for the tool-heads.

I intend to drive the device with a Sanguino, and eventually plan to integrate a GumStix Single Board Computer with the device to offer a complete stand-alone machine. I also intend to document and openly release all of the work I put in, though it is mostly a re-hashing of information collected from countless sources online.

My biggest question currently, is trying to sort out which of the components who's PCBs are avaliable through RRRF are best to use for the device? Is it necessary for me to order the PCBs through a fabrication service or can I complete a machine with what Zach is selling?

I would greatly appreciate any assistance anyone can offer in this regard(especially someone local), and am open to discussion in person, or through any other means.

Zack "Hoken" Smith RepRap Guru, Fanboy and founder of the RepRap Research Foundation will be at HacDC, an open hacker space in North DC on January 24-25 for a RepRap Build-a-thon! The plan is to assemble an entire Darwin RepRap Acrylic kit over the course of a weekend in association with presentations on various topics of interest. This is a huge opportunity for the Baltimore Hacker/techy community and for BWRUG in particular, so mark your calendars now! HacDC has a great space about 30 minutes drive from Baltimore and while details are still being worked out this looks to be 2 days of heavy fun with some really cool folks. Speaking of details to be worked out, we need volunteers to help with logistics as well as general public outreach, so write me with ideas and offers of time and we will try to come up with a great set of offerings to team up with Hac DC to make this a HUGE event. The goal is to get lots of participation from the Balto/DC tech community as well as coverage from the regular press. At the very least this will be a fantastic chance to hang out and do RepRap stuff with a bunch of cool people so RSVP ASAP and we will get started on the arrangements. Watch this space for further details as they become available.

Is there any member willing to give me the opportunity? Is there any possible new meeting soon? Any information would be much appreciated.

The next meeting is at my house on Saturday 10/25 from 1 til 5 pm.
It is starting a little late for the convenience of Adam Hahn who has his Darwin extruding HDPE reliably in outlines but is having some software trouble with the infills. Hopefully somebody who is good with software (Mark?) can help him out. He says he will try to bring his machine with him so we can all have a look at a working machine. Should be exciting.

Directions to 6 Wade Av:
Take your best route to the 95/695 junction, head west toward Towson. Take the Fredrick Rd (Rt 144) exit (exit 13). Head South back over the bridge, immediately after the bridge and opposite exit ramp is a small brick building, turn left between that building and the large white funeral home. This is Wade Av. 6 is the 3rd house on the right facing the road, a blue house with a white picket fence. Park on the street in front, unless there is a really large funeral going on in which case you have to park way down the street.

This months Baltimore/Washington area RepRap Users Group meeting will be Tuesday, April 29, 2008 from 7 PM - 9 PM. We will gather in Room 114, Smith Hall of Art, George Washington University 801 22nd St NW, Washington, DC 20037.

For those of you who missed our last meeting, the reason for the change of venue is that this is the time and place for the monthly meeting of Dorkbot DC a group devoted to cutting edge and DIY electronics. Sounds like our kind of folks eh? Plus as a special added bonus slice o' coolness our own Jay Swift (Tom's little brother) will be presenting, and I quote:

* Jay Swift * : Bringing Up Darwin

The second in our continuing presentations on the RepRap project's
(http://tinyurl.com/56sr5p) plan for world domination and the good
people that are making that possible, Jay--a member of the
Baltimore/Washington RepRap Users' Group
(http://forums.reprap.org/list.php?39)--will have us oohing and ahhing
as he shows us his neonatal Darwin 1.0 and tells us where RepRaps come
from.

So I hope as many folks as possible will be there to give Jay our support, moral or otherwise, and generally help create the illusion that we can live up to that kind of press.

I will be driving from my place in Baltimore, and will be willing to give a ride to anyone crazy enough to trust their fate to the combination of my navigational ability and Mapquest.

Be there,

How about a Baltimore/DC area group?

I live in the south Baltimore area and could probably act as a hub at least initially (ie I have a house and email).
I know that Balto/DC(down to Mannassas?) is considered a metro area and folks commute from Penna in the north. East and west I'm not sure of the ranges but Annapolis is not unusual for day trips and west into Howard county. Not trying to exclude anyone from further away, but just trying to imagine an area within which it would make sense to have real life meetings. If folks are interested myemail is briandolgeATyahooDOTcom. I will be checking this forum as well.

Just as a reference I am in the gathering materials stage for a repstrap and a conventional gantry style machine known as a jgro which has a vigorous community behind it. It is normally used for 3D milling of wood and plastic. I want to modify it to work with the reprap tool changer to create a machine more oriented to producing desirable objects for everyday life rather than cheap plastic prototypes/disposables. The repstrap seems like a good, cheap way to get into electronics as well as motion control and 3D modeling/CAD software. My mechanical and woodworking skills are up to par and I have a decent shop (currently off-line) for woodworking, mechanical and jewelry work.

As usual I seem to have overtalked.
